Many Changes from 2025
If you’ve been holding off on back-to-school shopping, expecting the same two-week tax break Ohio offered in 2025, it’s time to adjust your plans. Ohio’s sales tax holiday is back for 2026, but state lawmakers have scaled it way back from the expanded version families enjoyed the past two years. Instead of two weeks and nearly every item under $500, you’ll have just one weekend – and a much narrower list of qualifying purchases – to get your back-to-school shopping done tax-free. Here’s what’s changed, what still qualifies, and how to make the most of the shorter window.
It will only be over the weekend of August 7th – August 9th. Starting at 12:00 am on Friday, the 7th, through 11:59 pm Sunday, the 9th. Last year, it was 2 full weeks, so you’ll have to be sure to get your shopping in over the weekend.
What Applies
This year, there is no expanded sales tax holiday on items $500 and under, like there was in 2025.
It only applies to back-to-school items, including:
Clothing – All individual items priced $75.00 or less
School supplies – All individual items priced $20.00 or less
School instruction materials – All individual items priced $20.00 or less
Sales tax in Ohio averages around 7.25% (doesn’t apply to groceries) and is generally higher in counties of Ohio’s larger cities (Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus).
Most schools have their back-to-school supply list available now. If you don’t have it, contact your school.
Be sure to check that sales tax is not applied at checkout, and verify it on your receipt.
The Bottom Line
Ohio’s 2026 sales tax holiday is a smaller version of what shoppers got used to in 2024 and 2025, but it’s still real savings if you plan ahead. Pull your school’s supply list now, make a shopping plan for the weekend of August 7th – 9th, and double-check receipts to confirm the exemption applied correctly at checkout. With only three days on the calendar this year instead of two weeks, there’s less room for procrastination – so get your list together and get it done before Sunday night at 11:59 pm.
